Fairly non-heuristic (~useless) heuristics they must use, e.g., Daniel Larison (Eunomia) is rated as genius reading level while Gene Expression is undergrad. Perhaps one term in the heuristic is the number of non-english words/names?
Notwithstanding, for my money you write both extremely well and at an appropriately level for your subject matter, at a good level for the sciolist (me, your reader, not you). Thanks.
