Security expert Bruce Schneier has an excellent essay at Wired drawing some much-needed attention to the increasingly obvious fact that very many of the scary terrorists who want to KILL us!!!1!!1!! are laughably impotent Keystone Jihadis. This worth bearing in mind, because lots of hawkish rhetoric seems to tacitly assume that the proper metric of the threat we face is intention: How much they hate us, how much they want to kill Americans. But if wishes were nukes, you’d already be getting this blog post telepathically from an eight-foot cockroach. Competence matters, and terrorists groups are subject to an especially grisly version of the Peter Principle: They keep blowing up their best guys.
