With that admission out of the way, here’s one thing I find bizarre: The casting directors for a show set in California can’t seem to find anyone, for any of the various Latino roles, with a passable Spanish accent. I’ll give them a pass on Eli “Weevil” Navarro, played by Franics Capra, who’s the great-grandson of legendary director Frank and, as far as I can tell, not remotely Hispanic. Obviously, when you’re casting a major character, you just go with the actor who’s the best fit (within the boundaries of rough ethnic plausibility), and if he sounds more like some dude who took a year of high school Spanish than a verdadero vato, well, you can’t have everything.

But what about all those tiny parts, the characters who show up in one episode and whose only real function is to toss off some dialogue in Spanish? Is it unreasonable to think they’d cast someone who didn’t need a Berlitz crash-course before trying to pronounce their lines?
