Maybe two years ago, my friend Abe Sutherland popped in a tape at a friends house to show us a movie he said his brother Ben had made. I’ll confess, while I was willing to assume Abe’s extremely high intelligence ran in the family, I went in with a modicum of skepticism: Surely Abe’s high praise was colored by fraternal affection. But it proved to be even better than he’d hinted—a funny and utterly fascinating look behind the curtain at a Paris institution, the eccentric George Whitman’s Shakespeare & Company bookstore. Now, finally, the rest of you can enjoy it as well: Portrait of a Bookstore as an Old Man has been airing on Sundance this month. Except it now appears to have finished its run for the month; keep an eye out for repeats and your fingers crossed for a DVD.
