Mother Jones links to the Sunlight Foundation’s Transparency in Government Act 2008, explicitly linking it to Larry Lessig’s Change Congress campaign, but noting that the proposed legislation “goes beyond” Lessig’s platform. This is actually one of my reasons for skepticism about the project. CC asks candidates to pledge to, among other things, “support reform to increase congressional transparency.” Well, great. But if there’s a bill that does some of the specific things on the CC platform, along with various others, is a candidate breaking her pledge if she votes against that legislation on the grounds that it does some other objectionable thing? Are we ever going to see a proposed bill pure and unmuddled enough to provide an unambiguous metric of fidelity?
