As I mentioned a little while back, the latest Mike Doughty album, Golden Delicious, is damn good—and especially gratifying if you’re an old Soul Coughing fan who’ll appreciate a few tracks that skirt the borders of that late-lamented band’s aural territory. Now, being a longstanding Doughty fan, I actually pre-ordered the album as soon as word went out to Doughty’s mailing list that it was available, marking the first time in years I’ve bought a physical CD. Earlier this week, however, I learn that the iTunes version of the album (which is how I would normally have picked it up) includes a cover of the excellent Magnetic Fields song “Book of Love,” which can’t be purchased separately, as a bonus track. And that just seems like poor planning: Since there was no advance indication that the CD and digital versions would differ in any way, the hardcores who are most likely to be really interested in that extra track in effect get punished for acting early. So, yeah, boo to that.

Would you feel better if I email it to you?

It would ease the pain somewhat. Though actually I wanted to do a public post just because I thought it was sort of a lame move to pull on one’s fans.

Agreed – maybe it actually IS on your album but as one of those super secret hidden tracks that they put at the end of the last track after about five minutes of silence? I hate those. It’s always a good song, but who wants five minutes of silence on their iPod? Not I.
Anyhow, I will email it. Somewhat eased pain is better than full-on pain.
