You Gotta Keep Your Plotting / Full of the Holes

February 11th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Slate‘s Jeffrey Goldberg sums up my reaction to some of the current season’s storylines on The Wire. This weird fabricated serial-killer plot has taken a show hailed for its gritty realism straight into it-was-my-evil-twin soap opera territory. (Maybe the old Jimmy McNulty has been replaced by Detective Popil from Hannibal Rising? But then where’s Dominic West’s preposterous French accent?) If cousin Oliver shows up to crack the Stanfield case wide open, I’m out.

I’m a week ahead so I don’t want to ruin anything, but let’s just say the trend you observe so far is not in a hurry to reverse itself.

    Gee, thanks for the spoilers.

Jeez, this plot has been ongoing for weeks, and I’d scarcely have thought such a general reference counted as a “spoiler”. Anyway, there’s got to be some kind of statute of limitations on having to keep quiet about running show plot points.

I should have been more clear. I’m not saying that the current plot lines continue or not, I’m saying that the plot continues to be fucking ridiculous and very unWirelike.
