I left a huge one out of my “shouldn’t the iPhone do this?” list: Podcast updates. I would probably listen to various NPR news podcasts on my iPod, except I’m lazy and don’t want to be bothered with remembering to update and sync whenever I’m about to go anywhere. So it would be ideal if I could subscribe and have my phone download the latest version of my programs at some preset interval. But Apple seems to have deliberately crippled any such functionality on the iPhone: Its version of iTunes won’t even let you browse podcasts for manual download. Perhaps because they hope they can steer mobile users to their paid content, as they’re (rather ineffectively) trying to do with ringtones?
