There are some cases where I’d like my Mac to use different programs to open certain files with different extensions, even when the underlying file type is the same. For instance. .RAR files and .CBR files are basically both just RAR archives, but I want the former to open with the appropriate extractor, while the latter open in a CBR viewer. But OSX seems to just ignore the extension and make its application associations based on the underlying file type. Anyone know how to fix this?

There is a free program here: http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/ and a tutorial here: http://www.creativetechs.com/iq/set_default_applications_in_mac_os_x.html

Select a file of the given type and open the inspector (Command-i)
Expand the ‘Open with’ section if necessary by clicking on the turny triangle.
Select an application with the popdown list. Click ‘Change All…’ to have all documents of that type open with the selected app.
