Earvolution has released their list of the greatest fictional rock bands, and I’m delighted to see the nefarious American Medical Association from the cult-classic Illuminatus! Trilogy
make the cut. On largely contrarian grounds, I’m sort of tickled to see the obvious choice for the top slot, Spinal Tap, bumped to second by Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Conspicuous by their inexplicable absence, however, are Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers:

I was in a fake band for a while. We never played a gig under the same name twice. (We only played 5 times.) My two favorite names were “Anorexic Nancy and the Chocolate Rockets” and “Testifyin’ Ryan and the Christian Pistons”. Our rule was whoever was “singing” that night got to pick the name, but you can pick out the pattern we used from the above two.
