By leaving, Rove could be doing his last bit of service to the president: If it’s a successful last year, the myth of “Bush’s brain” may be laid to rest.
I can’t even conceive the kind of deus ex machina that would be required to provide Bush with a “successful last year.” Although correcting for the soft bigotry of low expectations, I suppose not launching a catastrophic war on Iran might qualify at this point.

Sorry, I have to voice my crazed-speculation somewhere: Rove joins Newt for his dark horse run? I know he’s been beaten around lo these past years, but that hasn’t stopped TO and Randy Moss from finding work…

I wonder if Rove isn’t looking to his career, here. Bush is on his way out the door, leaving a smoking wreck; Cheney isn’t running. Given the difficulty of predicting who will get the GOP presidential nomination and the odds against that guy winning, perhaps Rove figures it’s time to take a few years off. He’ll be handsomely paid, I’m sure, and he can avoid the mess of the next few years. then, in 2010, he can work his way back in, finding a likely GOP politician to support….
