A federal court has ordered the popular site TorrentSpy to begin logging user activity, which the Motion Picture Association of America would dearly like to inspect. The article linked above bills this as a victory for the movie industry, but that’s doubtful in the broad sense. If it’s public knowledge that MPAA lawyers are watching activity through TorrentSpy, pirates are just going to switch to other sites, probably ones further from the reach of American courts. Still, I’m sure the folks billing for all this litigation are gleefully counting the number of times this rock can be rolled up the hill before its futility becomes apparent.
