Three quick questions about this Kay Hymowitz piece:
- Is “Why men have become more discreet than women, assuming they have” really “one of those cultural mysteries that is yet to be solved”? Two words; Asymmetric incentives. I’m just going out on a limb here, but I’m guessing that (to pick one crude metric) the amount of money spent by heterosexual men to look at naked women is somewhat greater than the amount spent by heterosexual women to look at naked men.
- On a related note, does Hymowitz really imagine that when candid shots of a young celeb wearing a short skirt and no panties garner a flurry of press attention, especially when said celeb has built a career on an “Oops, I Did It Again” image of hybrid naughty/innocent sex appeal, the decision to continue going out sans underwear is best chalked up to naiveté?
- Does anyone else find it really hilarious that in an article whose central image is Britney Spears’ shorn vagina, Hymowitz spends a paragraph talking about an article by Daphne Merkin?
