If someone compared torturing a dog to torturing a child, we would rightly find that offensive. But it would also be pretty hideous to torture your dog in “protest.” So I think Amy has it just right. PETA’s new campaign is morally obtuse, and unlikely to convince anyone. But Meryl Yourish’s “Eat an Animal for PETA Day” is an equally bent response. Because when you get past that insensitive comparison, it’s true that the contemporary meat industry does truly horrendous things to animals, and just because it’s not in the same league of awful as the mass murder of human beings doesn’t mean it isn’t bad, or that we should support immorality just to spite people who overstate its awfulness.
