As those of you who know me probably know, my first name isn’t really “Julian,” strictly speaking. My real first name is “Miguel,” after my father. Julian is a middle name, taken from Gore Vidal’s novel about the emperor Julian the Apostate, who attempted to revert the Roman Empire to Hellenic paganism after Constantine converted it to Christianity. Anyway, if you look at my driver’s license or passport or Library of Congress card, they’ll tell you my name is “Miguel Sanchez,” though everyone calls me “Julian.” But it’s actually more complicated than that. Y’see, in a previous life, I was attorney Lionel Hutz.
