I’ve just discovered the Flaming Lips‘ new album, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. In addition to digging the sound — a garage-band-with-the-garage-full-of-helium sort of affair — I was impressed with their decision to make the album available online. Unlike most of the major labels, which are playing a lawyer-and-lobbyist heavy lock-up strategy with their content, the Lips are betting on the benefits of openness and exposure. And in gross violation of the RIAA’s theories of consumer behavior, I fully intend to purchase the album. I’ve also now got one more reason to head up to Brooklyn next month for the Unlimited Sunshine Tour, where they’re joining up with some other phenomenal groups, such as Cake, Modest Mouse, and De La Soul. I’m jazzed already.
Would you like to battle my pink robot?
