Politic: The Gathering

catomagic.jpg So, I’m out of sympathy with the sentiment, obviously, but it is pretty damn funny—especially if, like me, you spent your formative geek years in thrall to Moderately-Multiplayer Ontable Role-Playing Games.

The person who created this image has actually produced a whole series of Magic-style cards representing various elements of political argument and conflict: philosophers, pols, wonks, flacks, and even some of your favorite logical fallacies. A shame this didn’t come around earlier: Ludwig von Mises would’ve fit right into my old blue-black deck.

    This is the best one.

    I beg to differ.

At least the game will end well.

Of course you were a black & blue player.

“Of course you were a black & blue player.”

I’m missing the connotation here… why is that?

The glory of the interweb. Not so long ago, I would have thought that I was the only person in the whole world who would find such a thing funny.

I for one would expect blue from a philosphy major. It was about control, interruption, by far the most “meta” color.

Black, though? I don’t know. It’s ruthless? Contrarian? Are you just a little macabre?

Several of the friends with whom I played preferred to describe it as “the most annoying color.”

Yes, exactly. i couldn’t have put it any better –black & blue: frustrating and so very meta. It rendered my precious green/white deck was useless. My circle played for cash, so I still bear the scars.

By far my best deck was white & blue. Hard to see how that could be less annoying to opponents than black and blue. I think I once went on a 14-game streak with that sucker.

I just remembered, from the nether regions of my geek brain, back in the day a black & blue was called a palpatine deck.

“Science is pretty gay, guys is a decidedly un-Nietzschean sentiment.

Private Flickr; any chance of seeing these somewhere else?
